Ghana establishes committee on future of National Cathedral
In Ghana, the Christian Council has established a technical committee to determine the next steps regarding the suspended National Cathedral project. It will include representatives of councils uniting various Christian groups, MyJoyOnline reports.
Funding and location
Christian Council Chairman Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson said the committee will consider practical issues of funding and the cathedral’s location, as well as other aspects important to the project’s future. The committee’s work is planned to be completed within a month.
The committee is then to submit its findings and recommendations to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga. They will subsequently be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama so that he can make a decision on the project’s future.
The Council expressed hope that this process would help resolve differences surrounding the cathedral and reduce uncertainty over its future. Minister Ayariga had previously stressed the need for consensus within the Christian community on the project’s location, cost and funding.

Project history
Then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the National Cathedral project in March 2018. It was planned to be built on a 14.5-acre site near Independence Square, Osu Cemetery and Accra Sports Stadium.
The project by British-Ghanaian architect David Adjaye envisaged chapels, a baptistery, a 5,000-seat hall, a music school, an art gallery and Africa’s first Bible Museum.
According to MyJoyOnline, an audit of the National Cathedral Secretariat’s activities for 2021–2023, completed by Deloitte and Touche in May 2025, indicated financial irregularities, non-compliance with procurement procedures and an overall lack of proper procedures. In July 2025, President Mahama dissolved the Secretariat, ordered a comprehensive forensic audit, and the Ghanaian authorities instructed the Attorney General to take legal steps to lawfully terminate the cathedral contract.
