In Greece, a man armed with a knife attacked tourists near the Acropolis

On Tuesday morning, a knife attack occurred near the entrance to the Acropolis archaeological complex in Athens. Two tourists were injured in the incident.

According to Greek police, the incident occurred around 8:05 a.m. when a man armed with a knife attacked a Greek-American couple.

The woman sustained a minor injury to her arm, while the man suffered a more serious injury to his leg. Medical personnel provided first aid and transported the victims to the hospital.

According to preliminary information, shortly before the attack, the emergency response service received a report of a man with a knife threatening passersby near the southern entrance to the archaeological site, across from the Acropolis Museum.

The assailant was subdued and detained by officers from the Athens Police Department. His motives have not yet been disclosed.

According to local media, the suspect is a man approximately 45 years old who had previously been observed exhibiting aggressive behavior in the tourist area.

Police are investigating whether he may have been in a state of severe emotional distress or under the influence of substances. Authorities are also reviewing surveillance camera footage to reconstruct the exact sequence of events and determine whether there were other victims or witnesses to the threats.

The incident has raised concerns among Athens’ tourism authorities: the Acropolis receives up to 20,000 visitors daily, and any attacks in this area are viewed as a serious security challenge.

The Ministry of Culture has stated that it will increase patrols around the entrances to the archaeological site, especially in the morning hours when tourist traffic is heaviest.
