Two doctors detained in Greece over singer Maz(onakis)'s death
Police in Greece have detained two doctors in connection with the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis. Shortly before his cardiac arrest, he visited a private clinic for a plasmapheresis procedure. As Anadolu Agency reports, citing Kathimerini, the medics face charges under an article concerning exposure to mortal danger, which the source describes as a felony.
The doctors are due to appear before a prosecutor on Friday. An autopsy is also scheduled for the same day and is expected to help establish the circumstances of the singer's death.
Discrepancies in explanations
According to law enforcement officials, Mazonakis arrived at the doctors' office at least three hours earlier than the medics initially reported. Police also established that the plasmapheresis machine had been operating for more than 30 minutes, which may indicate that the procedure had begun.

This, according to the investigation, contradicts the doctors' explanations: they stated that the singer lost consciousness while they were attempting to insert a second intravenous catheter, before the plasmapheresis began. Police seized several items from the clinic, including computer files, for further examination after discrepancies were identified in the medics' explanations.
Clinic permits under review
The medical facility's licence and the list of procedures it was authorised to perform are being examined separately. The clinic's website stated that it provided plasmapheresis services and was the only certified centre of this type in Greece. One of the doctors in the case is listed on the centre's website as its medical director.
According to information provided by the Athens Medical Association (ISA) to Kathimerini, the premises on Karneadou Street were authorised to operate as a primary healthcare facility in internal medicine. The female doctor who worked with the internal medicine physician is registered as a doctor without a specialty. ISA representatives and members of the medical community said that therapeutic plasmapheresis is not performed at an ordinary primary healthcare facility. In Greece, such procedures are carried out at three hospitals — Laiko, Kratiko and Attikon — as well as at day hospitals.
