Number of people with higher education in China reaches 270 million — ECNS

In China, the number of people who have received higher education has reached 270 million. This was stated by Vice Minister of Education Wang Guangyan, ECNS reports.

Science and workforce training

According to Wang Guangyan, universities led about three-quarters of the total projects recognized by China’s three highest national science and technology awards in 2025.

He also said that vocational education provided more than 70% of new skilled workers.

University reform

China has issued recommendations on deepening university reform. Educational institutions are encouraged to develop along research, applied, or skills-oriented paths, based on their strengths and tasks.

Guo Peng, director of the Development and Planning Department of the Ministry of Education, said that under the 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, China intends to support the development of about 200 high-level applied universities.

According to him, skills-oriented universities will strengthen cooperation with industries, including advanced manufacturing and modern services, in order to provide more highly skilled workers.
