In Latvia, a man was convicted of spying for Russia

The Riga City Court sentenced a local electrician to five years and six months in prison for spying on behalf of Russian military intelligence, followed by one year and eight months of probation.

From 2016 to 2025, motivated by ideological beliefs, the man collected and transmitted information to his handlers about the Spilve airfield, the purchase of mobile phone SIM cards, aid to Ukraine, and NATO activities. His actions were deemed a threat to the country’s internal security and defense capabilities. The accused was detained and arrested in October 2025, and a new criminal case has been opened against the identified individual who directly directed this espionage operation.
