Influencer Ibrahim Khalil killed in Nigeria after reporting threats

In the city of Kano in northern Nigeria, 57-year-old social media influencer and radio station employee Ibrahim Khalil, known as Danshagamu, was killed. According to Premium Times Nigeria, several days before his death, he published a video in which he said his life was under threat and asked the Kano State authorities and police for protection.

Police said that at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, attackers forcibly entered Khalil's home in the Gaidar quarter of the Kumbotso Local Government Area and inflicted fatal injuries on him with sharp objects. Law enforcement officers arrived after receiving a report from the commander of a local vigilante group and took the severely injured man to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

Statements about danger

In a video circulated after his death, Khalil claimed that neighbors had allegedly conspired against him and threatened him. According to him, the conflict began after local children asked him for sadaka, or alms. He said that after he refused, one child taunted him while another threw stones into his living room, damaging a television.

Khalil also said that the children's parents and community leaders did not respond to his complaints. He publicly appealed for help to Governor Abba Yusuf, the police, and the Emir of Kano.

Investigation

The deceased's sister, Halima, told journalists that her brother had stopped spending nights at home out of fear for his safety and had been staying with a friend. According to her, unidentified individuals had previously also tried to lure him out of his home, referring to an alleged distribution of government aid.

Kano State police detained two suspects in the case. Police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa said they were being questioned, while investigators were conducting forensic examinations and collecting testimony to establish the full circumstances and motive of the attack. Governor Yusuf condemned the killing and instructed security agencies to identify, detain, and bring all those involved to justice. Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to investigate Khalil's death and ensure that those responsible are punished.
