Dilapidated school in Pakistan threatens safety of 540 female students — Dawn
In Pakistan, in Doberan Kalan of Kallar Syedan tehsil, 540 female students study in the dilapidated building of a government girls’ higher secondary school. As Dawn reports, the school has rooms with cracks in the walls and roof.
Condition of the school building
Doberan Kalan resident Mohammad Munir Chishti said that the school building was constructed before the partition of India. The girls’ institution was later upgraded first to a secondary school and then to a higher secondary school.
According to him, eight rooms are in a dangerous condition due to cracks in the walls and roof, while five classrooms can only be used with difficulty. Chishti also said that despite limited resources, teachers achieve results above 80%.
The authorities funded the construction of two new rooms, but the work was not completed due to a lack of further funding, he added.

Appeals for reconstruction
Another local resident, Mohammad Safir, said that the students’ parents are concerned about widening cracks in the walls. School council member Raja Zafar noted that the institution received higher secondary school status with the assistance of Sadiq Sanjrani, when he was chairman of Pakistan’s Senate and visited the village. However, the school building was not renovated.
Rawalpindi District Education Authority Chief Executive Officer Yasin Baloch said that recommendations for the reconstruction of eight dangerous rooms had already been submitted to the provincial authorities in Lahore. He also visited the school last week.
School council members called on provincial Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat to pay attention to learning conditions and allocate funds for reconstruction.
