Pakistani security forces report killing seven militants — Dawn

In Pakistan, security forces said on September 29 that they had killed five militants during an intelligence-based operation in the Bara area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Another two militants were killed during operations in Chagai, Balochistan, according to security force sources, Dawn reports.

Operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Security force sources said that a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition was seized during the operation in Bara. According to them, those killed belonged to Fitna al Khawarij, a term used by the Pakistani state to refer to militants of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan movement.

Security forces also said that militant hideouts were completely destroyed as a result of the operation in Bara. They stressed their intention to continue fighting terrorism and ensure lasting peace in the country.

Prime Minister's reaction

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. As Radio Pakistan reports, he said that the security forces had demonstrated professionalism, courage and bravery, and that operations would continue until terrorism was completely eradicated in the country.

Two days earlier, Pakistan's military media wing reported that more than 71 militants had been killed in the Shaban area and other parts of Balochistan. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, at least 378 people were killed in August amid an increase in terrorist attacks. The report also said that 203 militants were killed during security force operations and 54 security personnel died; these figures were lower than in July. Balochistan was hit hardest by the attacks, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
