Romania scrambled fighter jets in response to aerial targets near the border
On the evening of Monday, August 24, Romania scrambled two F-18 fighter jets from the Spanish Air and Space Forces after detecting two aerial targets moving toward the Romanian border.
At 10:37 p.m. on August 24, the Romanian Ministry of Defense’s radar surveillance system detected two aerial targets 25 km northwest of Zmiinyi Island.
The targets were moving toward Romania’s state border.
To monitor the situation, two Spanish F-18 fighter jets, stationed at the 57th Air Base named after Mihail Kogălniceanu, were scrambled.
At 10:55 p.m., a warning was issued via the RO-Alert system in the northern part of Tulcea County.
Three minutes later, at 10:58 p.m., the radar contacts disappeared. At the same time, reports of explosions came in from the Ukrainian side.
The Romanian Ministry of National Defense emphasized that no violation of the country’s airspace was recorded.
