In Sydney, nearly 90 drones crashed into the harbor during a drone show
During the annual Vivid Sydney festival in Sydney, a drone air show took place that ended in an incident. Due to technical malfunctions, nearly 90 drones fell into the water near Darling Harbor. The organizers attributed the situation to technical difficulties and canceled the remaining performances on the program.
The Guardian reports on this.
The drone air show, titled Star-Bound, took place in Sydney on May 25. During the event, thousands of drones lit up the sky over the Australian city.
This was Vivid’s first drone show after a two-year hiatus: in 2024, drones were temporarily removed from the program due to concerns about crowding among spectators.
However, on opening day, the show had to be interrupted due to a technical malfunction that caused 89 drones to crash in Darling Harbor and along the waterfront.

“Preliminary data indicates that there was no malicious activity, but we are still investigating all possibilities,” explained Difan Rees, head of operations and production at Skymagic, the company that organized the drone show.
The next four performances on Tuesday and Wednesday were canceled so that operators could conduct a full technical and safety check.
Karen Jones, CEO of Destination New South Wales, apologized to the audience and announced the next show for May 31. “I can’t guarantee that it will take place. It depends on the results of this assessment,” she added.
