Husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan dies in Tanzania
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died in Tanzania. He died while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, BBC News reports.
Hassan’s death was officially announced by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi. According to him, the president’s husband had a heart condition and died at 08:00 local time on Monday.
Funeral arrangements in Zanzibar
Ndejembi said preparations for funeral arrangements are under way in Kizimkazi, a village on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar. The vice president also expressed condolences to Samia Suluhu Hassan, the family and friends of the deceased.

Kenyan President William Ruto said he received news of Hassan’s death “with deep sorrow.” He described him as the president’s lifelong companion, a loving father to his children and an outstanding son of Tanzania. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also expressed condolences, saying he supported the first family and the people of Tanzania.
Rarely appeared in public
Hafidh Ameir Hassan was an agricultural scientist and largely stayed out of public life. He became Tanzania’s first gentleman after Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency in 2021. The couple married in 1978, before Samia Suluhu Hassan began her political career, and had four children — three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a politician and a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives in the National Assembly.
