Two French citizens have been detained in Togo since July 27 and are currently under judicial investigation. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this to AFP, according to France 24.
According to local media, the detainees work as journalists and directors for a French production company. The French Foreign Ministry confirmed their detention but did not disclose details of the judicial investigation or the reasons for their arrest.
Togo has been led since 2005 by Faure Gnassingbé, who succeeded his father in office. His father had ruled the West African nation for 38 years.

Since late 2021, attacks by jihadists operating from neighboring Burkina Faso have been reported in northern Togo. In 2022, the government declared a state of emergency in one of the northern regions. It has been extended several times, most recently in February for one year.
In June 2025, Radio France Internationale and France 24 were suspended from broadcasting in Togo for three months. The authorities accused these media outlets of spreading allegedly inaccurate and biased statements following demonstrations critical of the government. In the annual Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, Togo ranks 97th out of 180 countries.
