Warsaw has apologized for shooting wild boars in residential areas

Warsaw city officials have apologized to residents for culling wild boars right in residential areas, a move that sparked outrage among city residents.

This was reported by RMF24.

The incidents occurred in late March and early April in the Bemowo and Mokotów districts. The animals entered the yards of residential buildings, including playgrounds.

In Bemowo, four sows with piglets were spotted, and in Mokotów, a group of adult boars. Due to the potential danger to people, it was decided to shoot them on the spot.

These actions sparked a negative reaction from residents, particularly because the culling took place in public, and the animals’ carcasses were subsequently thrown into trash containers.

The city forestry department stated that public safety is a priority but promised to act more sensitively in the future.

They explained that they first try to scare the animals away, but this is not always possible. Transporting wild boars outside the city is prohibited due to sanitary restrictions related to African swine fever.

According to official estimates, there are about 3,000 wild boars living in the Warsaw area. In 2025, over 120 cases of dangerous behavior and 29 attacks on dogs were recorded.

In Warsaw, Polish police believe that candles improperly placed by worshippers may have caused the 17-meter cross to catch fire on Good Friday.
