During his visit to the White House, Ukrainian boxer and former undisputed world champion Oleksandr Usyk significantly influenced U.S. President Donald Trump’s change in attitude toward the Russian-Ukrainian war.
During a one-on-one conversation without an interpreter, the Ukrainian athlete explained to the American leader that Ukrainians are a nation of fighters and winners, and also spoke about his own family, which had been caught in Russian shelling in Kyiv.
When Trump asked him to explain the difference between Ukrainians and Russians, Usyk pointed to his head and his heart. In addition, the boxer presented the U.S. president with a signed boxing glove, and their shared admiration for Muhammad Ali—with whom the Ukrainian champion shares a birthday—further helped to bring them closer together.
