China's Supreme Court confirms ban on exorbitant bride price demands

China’s Supreme People’s Court has officially affirmed that sudden weddings between strangers involving excessively high bride prices can be considered an attempt to extort money or property disguised as marriage.

In cases where signs of "marriage fraud" are present, courts must forward materials to the police, and defendants will face criminal liability. While the bride price (彩礼) is a traditional Chinese custom, social pressure to "keep up with the neighbors" has caused these sums to become exorbitantly high, placing a severe financial burden on the groom’s family and potentially triggering marital disputes.

This ruling aims to protect families from economic and legal troubles stemming from abuses in traditional wedding practices and is likely to lead to stricter oversight in such cases moving forward.
