Zara Larsson criticizes White House over ICE video — Rolling Stone

In the United States, Swedish singer Zara Larsson criticized the social media team of President Donald Trump’s administration over its use of her song Midnight Sun in a White House TikTok video. As Rolling Stone reports, the clip showed people being detained by ICE agents and included the caption “Endless deportations.”

The singer’s reaction

In a video response on TikTok, Larsson said she was saddened by what she saw and would like to speak with the person who created the clip. According to her, the people on both sides of the screen and those shown in the video are not all that different; the main difference lies in their life circumstances.

The singer noted that she considers herself fortunate because she was born in Sweden, had access to education and the opportunity to travel. She added that other people may seek a better life for themselves, their families and their children. Larsson also said she does not understand why the status of an undocumented immigrant can be considered the worst in the world.

Criticism of the song’s use

Larsson called the video dehumanizing toward the people shown in it and stressed that they are real people. She also criticized turning everything into memes. According to the singer, Midnight Sun is about the feeling of connection with nature, the universe and people, while the clip, in her view, creates division between people.
