Russia wants to make a film about the son of the CIA deputy director, who fought against Ukraine

Russia plans to produce a feature film titled “The Volunteer” about American Michael Gloss—the son of CIA Deputy Director Juliana Gloss—who was killed fighting against Ukraine on the side of the occupying army. To produce the film, the creators applied for funding from Russia’s “Film Fund.”

The project was presented on July 7. According to producer Maxim Korolev, the film is intended to tell the American’s story through his interactions with Russian military personnel and, as envisioned by the creators, to demonstrate “the humanity of the Russian soldier” and “the American’s disagreement with global policy toward Russia.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027 and wrap up in the spring of 2028.

Michael Gloss traveled to Russia in 2023 and signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense. According to Russian media reports, he was killed in April 2024 near Chasovoy Yar in the Donetsk region while fighting against Ukraine.

After his death, Russian authorities actively used this story for propaganda purposes. In 2025, Gloss was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, and a monument was erected in occupied Donetsk. Later, the leader of the “DPR” group, Denis Pushilin, proposed making a feature film about him.

This was reported by the publication Verstka.

As a reminder, Brezhnev’s great-grandson explained why he ended up fighting in the war against Ukraine.

On the night of July 6–7, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Ukraine, deploying 123 strike drones of various types. Air defense forces shot down 108 enemy UAVs, but hits were recorded at ten locations.
