Renowned Russian chanson singer Mikhail Gulko has died

Singer and musician Mikhail Gulko, one of the most famous figures in Russian chanson, has died. In 1980, he emigrated to the United States.

Mikhail Gulko was born in Kharkiv on July 23, 1931, to an actress and an accountant. As a child, the future musician learned to play the accordion and performed at school.

Gulko earned his higher education at the Mining Faculty of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute. He worked in mines in the Donetsk region and later took a position in Kamchatka, Russia. There, he was offered the position of director of a vocal-instrumental ensemble, where he had graduated from music school.

In 1980, Mykhailo Gulko emigrated to the United States, where he continued his musical career and wrote Russian chanson. Starting in 1993, the musician also frequently toured Russia with concerts. In particular, while in Russia, Gulko referred to himself as a touring artist, but he considered the United States his home. The singer also held U.S. citizenship.

In 1999, Mykhailo Gulko’s songs were released in the series “Legends of Russian Chanson,” and in 2002, in the “Grand Collection.” In 2006, a DVD of the concert “The Fate of an Emigrant” was released in Ukraine, and in 2009, the singer’s autobiography of the same name was published. In 2014, Gulko released the digital album “Unsung Songs,” followed by its second part in 2015.

Notably, among the singer’s well-known albums are compilations such as “The Blue Sky of Russia,” “Burned Bridges,” “Songs of the War Years,” “Abroad,” “New York – Moscow,” “To the Mainland,” “Unsung Songs,” and “Unsung Songs 2.”

Mykhailo Gulko spent most of his life in the United States. As is well known, he did not speak about the war in Ukraine and did not condemn Russian aggression. At the same time, he did not express public support for the Russian Federation either.

The news of the artist’s death was announced by Garik Krychevsky, an Honored Artist of Ukraine.

The remains of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Army were exhumed in Rotterdam.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers ordered the return of the remains of OUN founder Yevhen Konovalets to Ukraine.

As a reminder, a historic reburial took place at the National Military Memorial Cemetery for Colonel Yevhen Konovalets of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, OUN Chairman Andriy Melnyk, and his wife, Sofia Fedak-Melnyk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted Bill No. 15360, “On the Ukrainian National Pantheon,” to the Verkhovna Rada. The head of state officially announced this initiative on June 28 at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during his traditional address on the occasion of Ukraine’s Constitution Day.
