Hyundai Motor Group postpones launch of its own driver-assistance system until 2029
South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group plans to release vehicles with its own driver-assistance software at the end of 2029. This is two years later than the previous plan, which envisaged a launch at the end of 2027, Channel NewsAsia reports.
Cooperation with Nvidia
Until its own platform is launched, the automaker will cooperate with the US company Nvidia. In 2028, the companies intend to begin deploying advanced driver-assistance systems at levels 2+ and 2++.
Hyundai Motor Group President Park Min-woo stated that the partnership does not mean handing Nvidia full control over Hyundai’s technological development. According to him, Hyundai will jointly design the technology with Nvidia and use data obtained from the system to train and improve its own Atria software platform.
Park Min-woo previously worked at Nvidia and joined Hyundai in January. He helped deepen cooperation between the companies.

Sensors and automated driving
Hyundai vehicles based on the Nvidia Hyperion 10 platform will initially not use expensive lidar sensors. Instead, they will feature cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar. At the same time, Hyundai is considering using lidar for Level 3 automated driving systems, which allow hands-free driving under certain conditions.
Park Min-woo noted that sensor redundancy is important for safety: if one sensor fails, the others must ensure the vehicle operates safely. He did not specify a timeline for the commercial launch of Level 3 systems.
Level 2+ and 2++ systems require driver supervision. Hyundai and its affiliated Kia, whose combined annual sales exceed 7 million vehicles, plan to use their global fleet to collect data and train automated driving technologies. Hyundai expects to surpass its competitors in the volume of accumulated driving data by 2033.
Hyundai’s cooperation with Nvidia also covers autonomous driving, artificial intelligence data centers and humanoid robots being developed by Hyundai-owned Boston Dynamics.
