Saudi Arabian coffee utensils reflect traditions of hospitality
In Saudi Arabia, traditional utensils for preparing and serving coffee remain an important part of the material cultural heritage. This set includes items for roasting, cooling and grinding beans, as well as the traditional dallah coffee pot, from which the drink is served to guests.
From roasting to serving
As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing the Saudi Press Agency, the process begins with the mehmasah, a vessel traditionally made of iron or copper. Coffee beans are roasted in it over a fire or hot coals.
After roasting, the beans are cooled in a mibrad to prepare them for the next stage. This vessel was traditionally made from local wood and could have different shapes and sizes.

Najr and dallah
A najr is used to pound and grind roasted coffee beans, as well as cardamom and other ingredients. Its rhythmic sound is traditionally associated with receiving guests and with coffee being prepared at the gathering place.
The dallah, a traditional coffee pot for boiling and serving the drink, is one of the most prominent symbols of Arab hospitality. Before serving, the coffee is strained to remove grounds and spices. Such utensils reflect the craftsmanship of artisans who created practical items for everyday use.
