Alonso says his Formula 1 future depends on the regulations
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso said that his decision on whether to continue his Formula 1 career after the 2026 season will depend primarily on the regulations rather than the competitiveness of the car. The contract of the 45-year-old two-time world champion expires at the end of the season.
As Anadolu Agency reports, ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the Spaniard said: “This is not the Formula 1 we grew up with. This is not the Formula 1 we all want.” Alonso also noted that he would like to influence the future rules and help bring back “real Formula 1.”
Criticism of power units
Alonso criticized the power-unit regulations introduced this season. Due to the greater role of electric power and energy management, he called the competition a “battery world championship.”

Formula 1 has agreed to change the power balance of power units from 2027: increasing the contribution of the internal combustion engine and reducing the share of electric power.
Season results
At the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Alonso finished ninth and scored two points. It was his best result of the season, after which he rose to 19th place in the drivers’ standings with three points.
At the same time, the driver stressed that this result is not enough to make a decision about his Formula 1 future. According to him, Aston Martin must improve the chassis and engine by next season. The upcoming Italian Grand Prix will be Alonso’s 438th Formula 1 Grand Prix start, a series record.
