The State Bureau of Economic Security (SBES) uncovered the smuggling of alcohol worth over 97 million hryvnias
BEB detectives uncovered the illegal importation into Ukraine of 117 metric tons of ethyl alcohol and methanol. The total value of the contraband exceeds 97 million hryvnias, and it was smuggled in under the guise of automotive chemicals.
“Detectives from the BEB’s Kyiv Regional Office have filed an indictment with the court regarding this large-scale smuggling operation,” the statement reads.
The investigation established that the company ordered the shipment from Turkey and transported it in tanker trucks.
At customs, the goods were declared as “Fuel Additive Solvent,” although investigators say the tanks actually contained concentrated alcohol and methanol.
“The scheme was uncovered by cross-checking documents with the Turkish side: the details regarding the sender, recipient, transport, and weight matched, but the product name, the Ukrainian Classification of Goods for Foreign Economic Activity (UKT ZED) code, and the value turned out to be falsified—specifically to circumvent customs control,” the BEB explained.
During the searches, BEB detectives seized rough notes, computer equipment, seals belonging to third-party legal entities, and financial documentation.
