The Prosecutor General spoke about the NABU searches of his office and the items that were seized
Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko explained why NABU detectives were initially denied entry to the Office of the Attorney General to conduct searches. According to him, security personnel did not have information about the specific offices where law enforcement officers planned to conduct investigative actions.
Kravchenko also described what items the detectives seized from his office during the search.
Responding to a question about the searches at the Prosecutor General’s Office, Kravchenko explained that initially, State Security Service personnel did not allow NABU detectives to enter because the detectives refused to show their search warrants or specify which offices they were heading to.
“My colleagues had search warrants for my office and my deputy’s office, but they initially refused to show them because they didn’t want us to know where they were going,” Kravchenko noted.
Around midnight, I spoke with the heads of both NABU and the SAPO. I called and asked what was going on. They said, ‘We have a warrant to search your office, and we’re going to carry out the search.’
I said, “Okay, they’ll open everything for you—the office, the workspace, and the safes.” I gave the order, the investigators were let in, and they conducted all the searches.”
According to the Prosecutor General, he also asked the heads of the anti-corruption agencies whether he should expect a search of his residence.
“I was told that I would be informed of everything in accordance with established procedure. Then I received a message that an investigator was at my house. I asked them not to break down the door or the locks, but to wait for my wife—she was already on her way and would open everything for them. The investigators waited, and my wife showed them everything,” says Kravchenko.
The Prosecutor General also described what the detectives seized during the search of his office: “They didn’t take much from me: some new empty envelopes, four gift certificates worth 50,000 hryvnias each from the Canali store—which I can easily afford within my salary.
They also seized my identification code and other data from my personnel file in the reception area.”
According to the Prosecutor General, during the searches, NABU detectives also gained access to case files involving, among others, employees of anti-corruption agencies.
“There was nothing in my office, but my staff reported that their offices contained materials pertaining to NABU employees, as well as materials pertaining to employees of other law enforcement agencies. And NABU investigators gained access to these materials. However, I cannot disclose what these materials are, because I am not a prosecutor in these cases and I have not been granted permission to disclose them."
