The Foreign Ministry called on the international community not to recognize the Russian elections in Ukraine’s occupied territories
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Russia’s holding of so-called “elections” in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine is illegal, and their results have no legal force. Ukraine called on foreign states and international organizations not to recognize these actions by the Russian Federation.
The Foreign Ministry also called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia and not to regard the voting held in the occupied territories as an expression of the legitimate political will of their residents.
The Foreign Ministry noted that on September 18–20, Russia held so-called elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
“We reiterate our position: this farce has nothing to do with either democratic elections or the expression of the people’s will. Holding ‘elections’ in the temporarily occupied territories is illegal, and their results are null and void. This constitutes a violation of Ukraine’s national legislation and international law, which strips the entire process of parliamentary elections in Russia, as well as the composition of the Russian parliament, of any remaining legitimacy,” the ministry stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also drew the international community’s attention to the Moscow regime’s plans to use the results of these “elections” to legitimize further aggression and the continuation of war and terror.
In this context, the ministry emphasized that no “vote” held under the invaders’ control alters the internationally recognized status of Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories: The Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as the temporarily occupied parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, have been, are, and will remain an integral part of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community, all states, and international organizations that respect international law and the UN Charter, not to recognize the Russian “elections” to the State Duma as having been held in accordance with democratic standards, to condemn their conduct in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and other states, and to increase pressure on the aggressor state.
