In Lviv, doctors have been helping a girl with a rare disease preserve her own liver for 10 years
For nearly 10 years, doctors at the Center for Cholestatic Diseases at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv have been helping 10-year-old Romana, who was diagnosed with the rare genetic syndrome Alagille, preserve her own liver.
The condition was detected in the girl during the first weeks of her life. Due to impaired bile flow, the disease gradually destroys the liver, and in many cases requires a transplant during childhood.
After prolonged treatment and a personalized therapy regimen, doctors were able to stabilize the child’s condition. Currently, Romana does not need a liver transplant; she attends school and leads an active life.
Hospital officials note that the Center for Cholestatic Diseases is currently treating 17 children with Alagille syndrome. According to doctors, timely diagnosis and treatment can slow the progression of the disease and, in many cases, delay or prevent the need for a transplant.
