Ukrainian soldier Serhiy “Borets”—a member of the “Tengri” sniper unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense—has been killed. In the early days of the full-scale invasion, he became the subject of a famous photograph. In the photo, the soldier is riding a bicycle across a bridge toward Irpin, carrying a grenade launcher and three rounds for an RPG-7.

The soldier’s death was reported by Yuriy Butusov, commander of the UAV company of the 23rd Assault Regiment “Charter.” According to him, in the early days of the Russian offensive on Kyiv, “Borets,” along with his comrades, set out to confront a Russian armored column moving toward Hostomel, Irpin, and Bucha.

The author of the well-known photo is Volodymyr Myronyuk, a volunteer with the “Tengri” group, whose call sign is “John.” Butusov noted that amid the chaos and panic, there were soldiers who, despite the mortal danger, engaged Russian forces in battle.

According to Butusov, “Tengri” brought together experienced fighters with combat experience in Donbas and was one of the first to engage in battles for Kyiv.

“They were true tigers who sought out the enemy and sought battle, and were ready to give their lives to stop and destroy the enemy,” he wrote.

“Borets” was killed a few days ago in a Russian airstrike. At the time of his death, he was commanding a Marine unit. Butusov noted that it is difficult to determine the exact combat record of the soldier and his unit, as hundreds of Russian soldiers were killed.

“Borets” was one of the finest warriors of this war, who, according to Butusov, always inspired his comrades by his own example.
