New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, during Jimmy Kimmel Live in Brooklyn, United States, declined to send President Donald Trump a selfie with host Jimmy Kimmel. As Rolling Stone reports, in response to Kimmel’s suggestion, the politician said that he loves the host, but housing is more important to him.

Kimmel began the interview by showing clips in which commentators warned of the city’s alleged destruction under Mamdani’s rule. The mayor joked in response that the process was “going according to plan.”

During the conversation, Mamdani mentioned several of his own initiatives for New York. They include the Parents’ Night Out program, the idea of opening a city grocery store, building new public restrooms, work on the sewer system, and repairs to the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway.

According to the mayor, he wants to make the daily lives of city residents easier. Mamdani noted that people are facing difficulties and that he seeks to do things that will help them smile more often.

Kimmel also asked Mamdani about his relationship with Trump. The mayor said they have many disagreements, but both love New York. According to him, during meetings at the White House and the Gracie Mansion residence, he tried to focus on solutions that could make life easier for city residents.

Mamdani confirmed that he occasionally communicates with the president through messages. He named the Sunnyside Yard project in Queens among the topics, for which he seeks federal approval. The project envisages approximately 12,000 new homes and the creation of about 30,000 jobs.

The mayor also raised the issue of Haitian residents of New York whose protected status, according to him, had been terminated. Mamdani stressed that they are part of the city and need stability.
