Estonian President Alar Karis will complete his term in five weeks

Estonian President Alar Karis will conclude his term in five weeks. After leaving the presidential residence in Kadriorg, he and his wife, First Lady Sirje Karis, plan to spend more time at their home in Tartu, according to ERR News.

The couple hosted the final reception in the Rose Garden to mark Estonia’s Independence Restoration Day. Sirje Karis said that during her five years at Kadriorg, she gained a wealth of experience and got to know many people in Estonia and abroad. At the same time, she noted that after her husband’s presidential term ends, she will continue to fulfill some of her public duties as first lady.

Sirje Karis also said she wants to spend more time tending to her own garden and greenhouse in Tartu. Alar Karis noted that after moving out of Kadriorg, the couple will have to divide their time between Tallinn and Tartu, though they will likely spend more time in southern Estonia.

The president said that household chores had piled up during his term in office, and their home had essentially become a summer residence. According to him, tasks they cannot handle on their own should be entrusted to professionals. Sirje Karis added that she won’t be painting the ceilings or floors, but she does as many household chores as she can on her own.

Before the end of his term, Karis will still have a number of trips abroad. In the coming days, he plans to visit Ukraine, Latvia, and Italy, and later—the countries of Northern Europe, Germany, and New York. The Estonian Parliament—the Riigikogu—will convene to elect a new president on September 2.
