Nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs have been recalled in the U.S. due to a salmonella outbreak
In the U.S., a recall of nearly 1.6 million dozen white and brown free-range eggs produced in Texas has been reclassified to the highest risk level. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to these products, according to The Guardian World.
On August 12, the FDA designated the recall as a Class I recall. The agency defines this level as a situation in which consumption of or contact with the product is reasonably likely to result in serious health consequences or death.
As of July 24, at least 98 people in 17 states had fallen ill, and 26 of them had been hospitalized. Cases were reported between November 21, 2025, and June 30, 2026. The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have not reported any deaths linked to the outbreak.

According to the FDA’s recall report, Midwest Poultry Services identified the problem through proactive monitoring of the production environment and root cause analysis. As of July 22, the company has halted shipments of fresh eggs from its Texas farms.
The eggs were produced in Texas and distributed to retail outlets and food service establishments in that state, as well as in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The products were available, in particular, at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, as well as at Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. The sell-by and best-by dates for the affected lots ran through August 17.
Midwest Poultry Services had previously urged consumers not to consume the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
