Jaguar Land Rover has prepared the electric Range Rover Electric for its full presentation — a large luxury SUV with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. The manufacturer claims a range of up to 600 km under the WLTP cycle. In the United States, the model’s starting price will be $138,000 excluding the delivery charge, and orders have already opened.

As InsideEVs reports, the vehicle has retained the design and proportions of versions with gasoline, diesel and hybrid powertrains. The electric vehicle’s noticeable exterior differences are the charging port and the absence of exhaust pipes.

Range and charging

The Range Rover Electric will receive a battery with a usable capacity of 118.5 kWh, built from 344 AESC prismatic nickel-manganese-cobalt cells. The manufacturer is targeting a range of up to 333 miles, or approximately 536 km, under the EPA methodology for the US market and up to 600 km under WLTP.

According to JLR, charging from 10% to 80% at a compatible fast-charging station at a peak power of up to 350 kW will take 22 minutes. In 10 minutes, the vehicle is expected to add up to 125 miles, or about 201 km, of range. A full charge from a 22 kW home charger, according to the company’s estimate, will take approximately seven hours. US versions will have an NACS connector and Plug & Charge support on selected networks.

Power and off-road capabilities

The electric SUV is equipped with permanent-magnet motors on both axles. The claimed combined output is 542 hp, while torque is 627 lb-ft. The manufacturer claims acceleration to 60 mph, or about 97 km/h, in 4.3 seconds.

The model is built on the MLA-Flex platform, which is also used by hybrid, gasoline and diesel Range Rovers. According to the automaker, the electric powertrain and battery increased body torsional stiffness by 50%. The electric vehicle is only 75 kg heavier than the plug-in hybrid version, JLR said.

The company claims that the system can adjust electric motor speeds every 50 milliseconds and control wheel slip up to 100 times faster than in a comparable vehicle with an internal combustion engine. One-pedal driving works on inclines of up to 33 degrees, while the maximum claimed climbing angle is 45 degrees. The Range Rover Electric’s ground clearance is 8 inches, or approximately 203 mm; its approach angle is 33.2 degrees, departure angle 28.1 degrees, and ramp angle 22.3 degrees.

Development and equipment

JLR independently developed the powertrains, battery pack and thermal management system. Range Rover Managing Director Martin Limpert explained that this approach affected the duration of the model’s preparation, but was necessary to refine the technologies. The company also says it creates a digital twin of every battery to remotely monitor its condition and predict possible malfunctions.
