Kyiv is modernizing the power systems for trams and trolleybuses at a cost of nearly 100 million hryvnias

The municipal enterprise "Kyivpastrans" is launching a large-scale technological upgrade of the capital's transportation infrastructure. Plans have been announced to purchase modern, high-tech electrical equipment for the city's traction substations. The total estimated cost of the modernization is 99.2 million hryvnias.

Traction substations perform a critically important function in ensuring passenger transportation: they receive high-voltage alternating current from the general power grid, step it down, convert it to direct current, and provide an uninterrupted power supply to the contact networks of Kyiv’s trolleybuses and trams.

To improve the efficiency of these facilities, the following are planned to be purchased and installed:

  • 65 modular devices for reliable protection and control of the DC contact network.

  • 23 sets for modernizing the microprocessor-based diagnostic and automatic control system for power rectifiers.

  • 9 specialized operational current cabinets.

  • 2 telemechanics cabinets to improve communication and control.

The implementation of new microprocessor-based components will significantly expand the functionality of existing substations, increasing the safety and reliability of their operation. Modern technologies will ensure continuous remote monitoring of facility operations, precise control of cable network parameters, and will also allow for the rapid detection, recording, and localization of any malfunctions in power units.

Kyivpastrans emphasizes that this step will significantly improve the quality and stability of the power supply to the city’s electric transit system, minimize the risk of line outages due to technical failures, and allow the city to significantly reduce operating costs for maintaining the entire power supply system. The full delivery and installation of the entire equipment complex is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2026.

This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration’s press service.

Klitschko called the 30-hryvnia fare in Kyiv too low.

Viktor Mykhailovych Vyhovskyi, head of the Kyiv Metro municipal enterprise, explained what the actual cost of transportation consists of and why the current fare is significantly lower than the cost price, which is determined by expenses for electricity, salaries, and staff shortages.

The Kyiv City Council was unable to pass a resolution that would allow negotiations to begin with international partners regarding a loan for the construction of the metro line to Troieschyna.
