Prices for popular vegetables have dropped sharply in Ukraine
The situation on Ukraine’s food market is gradually stabilizing following Russian terrorists’ attacks on large produce storage facilities. This week, prices fell for two popular vegetables at once—carrots and onions.
Producers attribute the price drop to an increase in market supply, while consumer demand remains low, according to EastFruit.
Producers have been gradually lowering prices for carrots from the 2026 harvest for about a month and a half now. Trading and purchasing activity in the market remains low.
Farmers need to sell significant volumes of medium-sized carrots, which are not suitable for long-term storage. At the same time, retail chains and wholesale companies are reluctant to purchase large batches due to slow sales of vegetables in stores.
Due to excess supply and subdued demand, producers are forced to lower their selling prices. Over the past week, carrot prices fell by an average of 10%, to 9–15 UAH per kilogram. However, they are still 32% higher than during the same period last year. If demand remains at current levels, prices may continue to decline.
Prices for onions fell by 10% over the week—to 12–18 UAH per kilogram. The price drop is due to the harvest of late varieties and an increase in supply. Currently, farmers are mainly selling onions that, due to their quality characteristics, are not suitable for long-term storage.
At the same time, onions remain 35% more expensive than they were a year ago. Market participants also note a significant reduction in the harvest of high-quality onions this season due to unfavorable weather.
As a reminder, vegetable prices in Ukraine changed noticeably at the end of August. Cucumbers saw the sharpest price drop—by nearly 60%—while potatoes, onions, carrots, and tomatoes at the “Stolichny” market remained at roughly the same level.
Prices for vegetables used in borscht continue to fall in Ukraine thanks to the arrival of the new harvest. No shortages of major vegetables are expected in late August and September.
