Russia Unable to Launch Large-Scale Offensive on Chernihiv — General Staff

As of December 2025, Russia does not have the capacity to conduct a large-scale offensive on Chernihiv region, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, cited by LIGA.net.

The General Staff noted that, based on assessments of the situation, the directions of main effort, and the forces and means deployed, the likelihood of Russia carrying out a large-scale offensive in Chernihiv in the short term is considered low.

There are no signs of the formation of strike groups or significant changes in Russian force composition and numbers over the past three months. Ukrainian forces continue to control the operational situation around Chernihiv city.

Currently, Russian troops focus on shelling border areas of Chernihiv region, using guided bombs (KABs), multiple rocket launchers (MRLs), artillery, and various types of drones. At the same time, the threat of enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups remains.

The General Staff emphasized that threats from Russian propagandists are part of an information war aimed at pressuring Ukrainian society and weakening Ukraine’s position in negotiations.

Ukrainian forces are continuously improving the existing defense system, including strengthening engineering barriers and anti-drone protection along critical routes.

The General Staff  reported 167 combat engagements occurred on the front.

Ukrainian defenders eliminated about 1,150 Russian soldiers in the past 24 hours, significantly increasing overall Russian losses.

Reinforcements have arrived to Ukrainian units, which continue to repel Russian assaults in the Pokrovsk direction.
